Rockstar Game Tips: Tailoring Your Settings and Controls in GTAV PC

Now that Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online have arrived on PC, players have been getting acquainted with the game's unique new features such as the Rockstar Editor video tool, experiencing Los Santos in glorious 4K at 60FPS, and diving into the game's deep menu of settings and customization options. To help you fine-tune, we've compiled a brief list below of just a few helpful tips to help you tailor Grand Theft Auto V's controls and settings to your desired PC gaming taste.

KEYBOARD CONTROLS

Finding some of the default controls aren't to your liking? The majority of the in-game controls are fully rebindable - meaning you can remap a command to whichever button best works for you. The one exception is menu navigation - most are bound to the cursor keys and WASD (forwards, left, backwards and right, respectively), Mouse 1/Enter to select and Mouse 2/Backspace/Esc to quit.

You can also use the Esc button to Quit/Go Back in other menus and interfaces, such as on your iFruit phone. If no menu appears on screen then pressing Esc will pause the game, whereas the Right mouse button goes back in most menus. If you don't want to bind your extra mouse buttons, you can also try switching the mouse input mode to DirectInput.

The mouse wheel works in most menus for scrolling the selection up and down - you can also use this feature to scroll the entire menu up and down. To open the cheat code box, press the ~ key (key next to 1, or ¬ on non-US keyboards). Here, you can enter various cheat codes, including vehicle spawning, invincibility and others. It should be noted, however, that some non-US keyboards may require the shift key to be pressed too.

To confirm a GPS route in the interaction menu, click the left mouse when hovering over the left half of the GPS menu entry. The menu cursor will change to a pointing finger to show this is possible.

GAMEPADS

For those who prefer controllers over keyboards, you can use any XInput controller (for example, an Xbox 360 pad) to play - and some DirectInput controllers such as PS4 are supported as well. Most other DirectInput gamepads can be set to work with the game by using the 'Gamepad Calibration' feature in the gamepad menu.



VEHICLES

Here's what you need to know for customizing driving as well as flying controls in-game:

Flying controls use the numeric pad keys by default. If you don't have a numpad, you may use your mouse to fly or rebind the controls. If you find controlling vehicles with a mouse difficult, try adjusting the mouse sensitivity and auto-center settings. Also, note that your driving and flying ability is affected by your in-game character’s skill level.

By default, the game uses keyboard controls for driving and flying. To steer with the mouse instead, you can hold down the mouse override control (Default: left mouse). If you’d like to use mouse control without holding down a button, change the driving/flying/submarine control option from ‘Camera’ to ‘Vehicle'. At that point, holding the left mouse button will move the camera around instead of steering.

To stop the camera from auto-centering when driving vehicles in first person, set the ‘First Person Vehicle Auto-Center’ option to ‘Off’. If you prefer a bumper camera to the internal camera when driving in this mode, set the ‘First Person Vehicle Hood’ camera option to ‘Off’.

SHOPPING

When stocking your arsenal, you can use the mouse in Ammu-Nation to select items directly from the shelves. Simply click the mouse over the weapon you want to purchase or upgrade, hold the left mouse to inspect - moving your mouse will rotate the weapon. To get a good look around, move the mouse to the edge of your screen. The mouse can be used to move the camera in the other shops and wardrobes as well as some other menus - just hold the left button when the hand-shaped pointer appears, then move the mouse.

MOBILE PHONE

To make calls, find/accept missions and Jobs, browse the web and more, you can operate your in-game iFruit phone almost entirely with the mouse buttons and wheel. By default, the middle mouse will open your phone, while the scroll wheel will move the highlight around. Left mouse accepts the current item, while right mouse cancels / goes back. These controls may be remapped as well.



WEAPONS

The mouse wheel behaves differently in the weapon wheel depending whether that button is held down or not. If it's not pressed then the mouse wheel scrolls through the current set of weapons, but if it is, the mouse wheel cycles through the available weapons in the highlighted slot. To instantly select a weapon, press the weapon selection keys (Default: 0-9). The first press selects the first weapon in the slot, further presses cycle through the weapons in that slot. Especially useful in first person view, you can zoom or switch to iron sights while aiming by scrolling the scroll wheel.

CHARACTER SWITCH

Switching between characters can be done directly using the character switch shortcut keys (Default F5 - F8). To switch in Freemode, hold a shortcut switch key to open the character wheel with the relevant character selected and release. In missions where switching is supported, just tap the appropriate shortcut key to instantly switch to that character.

GTA ONLINE

Here are some general controls tips pertaining to GTA Online:
To point in the same direction you're looking, press the 'point at' key (Default: B).
Perform your character’s Quickplay action by pressing the ‘special ability’ key (Default: Caps Lock). You can set up the Quickplay action in the Interaction Menu (Default: M).
Text chat is available to chat to your team (Default: T) or everyone in the session (default: Y).
Voice chat options can be configured from the Voice Chat section of the Settings menu. The default key for ‘push to talk’ is ‘N’.
Weapons and ammo can be dropped by using the F9 and F10 keys - no need to open the weapon wheel on PC.

ROCKSTAR EDITOR

Many of you have already been channeling your inner auteur and utilizing the new Rockstar Editor to create movie-making magic. To activate/deactivate the various recording modes without opening the character switch menu, press the Rockstar Editor shortcut keys (Default F1, F2, F3).
